Amboseli National Park is one of Kenya’s most scenic safari destinations. It is famous for large elephant herds, open plains, seasonal wetlands and dramatic views of Mount Kilimanjaro across the border in Tanzania. The park supports lions, cheetahs, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, antelopes and rich birdlife.
Amboseli is especially well known for close elephant encounters. The park’s marshes and open plains also support buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, hippos, lions, cheetahs and many bird species. Wildlife viewing is often excellent around the wetland areas.
On clear mornings and evenings, Mount Kilimanjaro creates one of Africa’s most iconic safari backdrops. Weather conditions change quickly, so mountain views cannot be guaranteed, but early morning game drives often provide the best opportunity.
Popular activities include morning and afternoon game drives, full-day wildlife viewing, photography safaris, birdwatching, sundowners and cultural visits to nearby Maasai communities. Some lodges also arrange bush breakfasts and nature talks.
Amboseli offers rewarding wildlife viewing throughout the year. Drier months often concentrate animals around permanent water sources, while greener months bring dramatic skies, lush scenery and excellent birdlife. Mountain visibility is usually best in the early morning.
