Day 1
Machame Gate โ Machame Camp
Begin at Machame Gate and climb through lush montane rainforest. The trail is often damp underfoot and gradually gains altitude before reaching Machame Camp.
Climb Kilimanjaro through rainforest, Shira Plateau, Lava Tower, Barranco Wall and Barafu Camp on one of the mountainโs most dramatic and rewarding trekking routes.
The Machame Route approaches Kilimanjaro from the southwest and is known for its variety of landscapes, strong scenery and useful acclimatisation pattern.
The route passes through rainforest, the Shira Plateau, Lava Tower, Barranco Wall, Karanga and Barafu before the final summit attempt toward Uhuru Peak.
The altitude profile shows the importance of climbing high and sleeping lower during acclimatisation.
A slower seven-day version generally gives a stronger acclimatisation profile than rushing the climb.
Day 1
Begin at Machame Gate and climb through lush montane rainforest. The trail is often damp underfoot and gradually gains altitude before reaching Machame Camp.
Day 2
Leave the forest behind and enter open heath and moorland. The route climbs onto the Shira Plateau with increasingly wide views across the mountain.
Day 3
Climb high toward Lava Tower for acclimatisation, then descend to Barranco Camp. This โclimb high, sleep lowโ day is one of the routeโs most important acclimatisation stages.
Day 4
Start with the famous Barranco Wall, then continue through undulating alpine terrain toward Karanga Camp. The day is shorter but still physically demanding.
Day 5
Ascend to Barafu Camp, the high base for the summit attempt. Arrive early enough to rest, hydrate, prepare clothing and organise equipment for the night climb.
Day 6
Begin around midnight and climb steadily toward Stella Point and Uhuru Peak. After summit photos, descend back through Barafu toward Mweka Camp for a well-earned rest.
Day 7
Complete the final descent through rainforest to Mweka Gate, where the trek ends and onward transport can be arranged.
Summit day is the longest and most demanding stage of the climb. The team normally leaves Barafu around midnight, climbing slowly through darkness toward Stella Point and Uhuru Peak.
Build endurance with hiking, stair work, cardiovascular training and long walking days.
Expect warm lower slopes, cold camps, wind and sub-zero summit conditions.
Consistent hydration supports performance and acclimatisation throughout the climb.
Slow, steady walking is a central part of altitude management on Kilimanjaro.
