Africa’s Highest Mountain

A world-class high-altitude expedition

Mount Kilimanjaro offers a dramatic high-altitude trekking experience through several ecological zones, from montane forest and bamboo to heath, moorland and stark alpine terrain.

Most non-technical trekking itineraries target Uhuru Peak. Batian and Nelion are technical climbing objectives requiring specialist mountaineering skills and are outside the trekking routes shown on this page.

Prepare Properly

Mountain-ready from the start

Good preparation improves comfort, safety and your overall climbing experience.

Layering

Hydration

Consistent hydration and a controlled pace are important parts of acclimatisation.

Climbing Questions

Frequently asked questions

Lemosho and Machame are popular choices because they offer strong scenery and better acclimatisation profiles than very fast itineraries. The best route depends on your available days, fitness and preferred style.
No technical rock-climbing skills are normally required for the standard trekking routes to Uhuru Peak, but the altitude, cold and long summit day make the climb physically demanding.
Six to eight days is generally preferable for most trekkers because a slower ascent supports acclimatisation.
Uhuru Peak stands at approximately 5,895 metres above sea level.
You will need layered cold-weather clothing, waterproofs, hiking boots, gloves, hat, sleeping gear, hydration capacity, personal medication and strong sun protection. A complete packing list can be provided before travel.
